The very first Bandolero Nationals occurred in 1998 at the two-year old Texas Motor Speedway, crowning three race champions. The Bandolero was formally separated into three divisions; Outlaws (16 and up), Young Guns (12-15), and Bandits (8-11). Following the 2009 season, The Outlaws and Young Guns were combined into a single division, retaining the Outlaws name. Since 2022, the minimum age for a driver to race in a Bandolero has been 7 years old. Additionally, from 2019 to 2022, Outlaws and Bandits were divided into East and West. The divisions were reunited for the 2023 season crowing a national Outlaws and Bandits champion.
The 2024 Bandolero Nationals will be held at Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It will be the first time since 2007 the event has visited the Midwest, and the first time for Hawkeye Downs hosting.
